Contrasting off‐line segmentation decisions with on‐line word segmentation during reading

چکیده
In two experiments, we investigated the correspondences between off-line word segmentation and on-line processing during Chinese reading. Experiment 1, participants were asked to read sentences which contained critical four-character strings, then, they required segment same into words in a later task. For each item, split 1-word segmenters (who segmented strings as single word) 2-word 2 two-character words). Thus, groups (1-word segmenters) according their bias. The data analysis showed no reliable group effect on all measures. order avoid heterogeneity of stimuli three types string ambiguous strings) identified norming study 2. Participants containing these strings. There was 2, case 1. However, spent less time made fewer fixations compared These results indicate that preferences do not necessarily reflect reading readers exhibit flexibility such word, or multiple constituent, commitments are on-line.

Recession Segmentation: Simpler Online Word Segmentation Using Limited Resources
In this paper we present a cognitively plausible approach to word segmentation that segments in an online fashion using only local information and a lexicon of previously segmented words. Unlike popular statistical optimization techniques, the learner uses structural information of the input syllables rather than distributional cues to segment words. We develop a memory model for the learner th...
متن کاملWord segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour
Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...
متن کاملAdaptive Chinese Word Segmentation with Online Passive-Aggressive Algorithm
In this paper, we describe our system1 for CIPS-SIGHAN-2010 bake-off task of Chinese word segmentation, which focused on the cross-domain performance of Chinese word segmentation algorithms. We use the online passive-aggressive algorithm with domain invariant information for cross-domain Chinese word segmentation.
متن کاملSpaces Enhance Word Segmentation and Comprehension in Tacit Reading
There are a lot of types of written language systems all over the world. The Japanese writing system uses ideographic and phonetic symbols without spaces between words, where the ability of finding the boundary between words is expected to have a positive correlation with the ability of general language comprehension. Is such a correlation to be found in languages (e.g., English) where words ar...

Reading online is different from reading offline. Are language teachers’ strategies for reading electronic texts and reading printed texts different? Do language teachers have different attitudes toward reading printed texts and reading electronic texts, particularly web-based reading materials? Several groups of in-service language teachers enrolled in a postgraduate course on computer-assiste...
